Living with Lean Season’s Food Insecurity in Sub-Saharan Africa

Across sub-Saharan Africa, agriculture continues to sustain the livelihoods of most rural households (Davis et al., 2017; Mutsami et al., 2025). But for many families who depend on the land, food insecurity is not always the consequence of droughts, conflicts, or economic crises. Instead, it often arrives with remarkable regularity, tied to the seasonal rhythms of planting and harvesting.


Each year, many rural households face what can be called the lean season—the months before the main harvest when food stocks from the previous harvest have been depleted, savings are running low, and market food prices are rising. Notably, this period often coincides with some of the most labor-intensive stages of farming. Families must work long hours preparing fields, planting crops, or maintaining farms while having the least food available to sustain themselves.


The challenge extends beyond farmers. As local food supplies tighten, non-farming households also experience higher prices and greater difficulty accessing nutritious food.


Because agriculture in much of sub-Saharan Africa depends heavily on seasonal rainfall, food security often rises and falls with the agricultural calendar. Yet a growing question among researchers and policymakers is whether rural communities can reduce their dependence on these seasonal cycles by diversifying how they earn a living (Barrett et al., 2001; Babatunde & Qaim, 2010).


A recent study examining households in Burkina Faso, Malawi, and Uganda offers new insights. Using high-frequency survey data collected between 2020 and 2024, researchers investigated how people shift between farming and non-farm activities throughout the year and how these shifts affect food security (Guthoff et al., 2026).


The findings suggest that off-farm employment can act as an important buffer against seasonal hunger. Households that engaged in wage labor outside agriculture—such as transportation, construction, retail, or service work—were often better able to maintain food access during difficult periods. Income from these activities helped families purchase food even when their own harvests were still months away.

 

However, the picture was not identical everywhere.


In regions where farmers can cultivate multiple crops throughout the year, agricultural work itself remained one of the strongest contributors to food security. In such places, the solution was not necessarily to leave farming but to strengthen and diversify agricultural production. Nature provided more than one growing season, and households that could work with these ecological opportunities often enjoyed greater resilience (Khuc & Nguyen, 2026).


This highlights an important lesson. Food security is not simply about producing more food or creating more jobs. It is about understanding how livelihoods fit within local environmental conditions. In some areas, strengthening agricultural systems may offer the greatest benefits. In others, expanding opportunities beyond farming may provide a crucial safety net.


The study also found that labor shifts from farming to non-farm work remain relatively limited. One reason may be simple: many rural communities lack sufficient off-farm employment opportunities. Families cannot diversify their income if alternative opportunities do not exist (Nguyen, 2026).


Resilience emerges not from choosing between farming and non-farm work but from creating systems where both can complement one another (Vuong, 2025; Anh, 2026). When livelihoods are designed to work with seasonal realities rather than against them, communities gain greater capacity to weather uncertainty, reduce hunger, and build more secure futures throughout the year.
